Solar Panel Maintenance Guide
Solar panels are one of the most low-maintenance home energy investments you can make. There are no moving parts, no fuel to replenish, and no consumables to replace. Rain handles much of the cleaning naturally, and modern panels are built to withstand decades of UK weather. But "low maintenance" does not mean "no maintenance."
Over time, dirt, bird droppings, lichen, pollen, and agricultural dust accumulate on panel surfaces — particularly in rural Wiltshire. Studies consistently show that dirty panels lose between 15% and 25% of their generating capacity. For a 4kW system producing 3,920 kWh per year, that is 600-980 kWh of lost generation — worth £180-£290 annually at current electricity prices.
Beyond cleaning, proactive monitoring and periodic inspections catch issues before they become expensive problems. Micro-cracks, degraded connections, and inverter faults are far cheaper to address early than after months of underperformance.
What You Can Do Yourself
Most day-to-day solar maintenance is simple and does not require a professional:
Monitor your output regularly. Your system's app shows daily generation data. Get into the habit of checking weekly. If output drops suddenly (not due to weather), something may need attention. Compare month-to-month and year-to-year to spot gradual degradation.
Keep panels clear of debris. Fallen leaves, bird droppings, and moss can shade cells and reduce output. If you can safely reach your panels from the ground with a long-handled soft brush and garden hose, a gentle clean every 12-18 months is worthwhile. Never use a pressure washer — it can damage the anti-reflective coating and void your warranty.
Check your inverter. Most inverters have a status light. Green means normal operation. If you see red, amber, or a flashing light, note the error code and contact your installer. Many inverter issues are firmware-related and can be resolved remotely.
When to Call a Professional
Annual professional inspections are recommended for any system over 2-3 years old. A qualified engineer will check things you cannot safely or easily assess yourself: mounting rail torque, DC isolator condition, cabling integrity, earthing continuity, and panel-level performance using thermal imaging.
You should also call a professional if you notice: a significant unexplained drop in generation, error codes on your inverter that do not clear, physical damage to panels (cracks, chips, delamination), water ingress near electrical connections, or birds nesting under the panels.
At Lumos Energy, we maintain systems regardless of who installed them. If your original installer has gone out of business — a frustratingly common scenario — we can take over your aftercare and bring your system back to peak performance.

Maintenance FAQs
We recommend professional cleaning every 12-18 months in Wiltshire. Panels in rural areas with heavy bird activity or near farmland may need more frequent cleaning. Dirty panels can lose 15-25% of their output — a professional clean typically costs far less than the energy you recover.
Yes. We frequently take over maintenance for systems installed by other companies — including those that have gone out of business. We inspect your system, identify any issues, and provide ongoing care regardless of who originally installed it.
Our annual health check covers: visual panel inspection for cracks and hotspots, mounting rail and clamp integrity, DC isolator and cabling check, inverter performance data review, earthing continuity test, generation data analysis, and a written report with recommendations.
Yes. Our annual service plan includes one professional clean, a full system health check, monitoring data review, and priority callout if issues arise. It is the most cost-effective way to keep your system performing at its best year after year.
