EV Charger Installation Portishead
EV Charger Installation in Portishead
Lumos Energy provides EV charger installation Portishead drivers trust: OZEV-approved 7kW and 22kW smart chargers, fitted by our own employed team — never a subcontractor — with a free survey and a reply within one working day.
We're based near Melksham and cover Portishead as part of our roughly 30-mile installation radius, alongside the rest of North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, West Berkshire and Somerset. Lumos Energy is MCS certified, NICEIC approved and a RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) member. Our lead engineer, Matt Butler, and the rest of our employed team handle every stage themselves — survey, installation and commissioning — so the person who quotes the job is accountable for fitting it.
What We Fit: 7kW and 22kW Smart Chargers
Most Portishead homes are best served by a 7kW (7.4kW) single-phase smart charger. It's the fastest a typical UK domestic electricity supply can safely take, it fully charges most electric cars overnight, and it works with every current EV on sale. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase electricity supply, which very few homes have — bringing one in means a new supply application and a groundworks cost that rarely makes sense for a single driveway. We specify 22kW only for the small number of Portishead properties, typically newer developments or ones with an existing commercial-style supply, where three-phase power is already on site.
Every charger we fit is a smart charger, with app-based control and scheduled off-peak charging as standard. On solar-ready households, we also set up a solar-matching or eco mode that draws on your own generation first and tops up from the grid only when it needs to. See our full EV charger installation page for the complete spec sheet and warranty details.
Portishead Housing and Parking: What It Means for Your Install
Portishead sits within North Somerset Council's area, with the M5's junction 19 (Gordano services) the nearest motorway access — useful to know if you're comparing installers, since it means our team can reach Portishead from Melksham without cutting through central Bristol.
The town's housing stock varies a lot, and that changes what an install actually involves. Around the marina, Port Marine — built from the late 1990s on the old docks and power station site — is mostly newer apartments and townhouses with allocated parking, garages or private parking courts, which usually makes for a straightforward wall- or post-mounted charger, though flats can need written consent from a landlord or management company first. Away from the waterfront, Portishead's older streets — Victorian and interwar terraces around the High Street and the town's conservation areas — were mostly built before anyone owned a car, so off-street parking is often a single narrow space rather than a full driveway, and some households have none at all. We can usually fit a charger wherever there's a private parking space to route the cable to, however compact; where a property has on-street parking only, we'll say so honestly at survey rather than take a booking we can't fulfil.
Charging From Your Own Solar Panels
A home charger and solar panels are a natural pair: charge during the day from your own generation and a big share of your driving costs nothing per mile. Our EV charging and solar page explains how the two work together — most smart chargers can be set to draw only surplus solar output, topping up from the grid only when your panels aren't generating enough.
If you haven't gone solar yet, our solar panels Portishead page covers panel options and what a system typically costs in this area, and our wider solar panel installation guide covers the process across our full coverage area. Add home battery storage and the power your panels generate during the day is still available to top up your car overnight, instead of being exported at a lower rate — something we size properly at survey rather than guessing from a brochure.
Your Electricity Network (DNO) in Portishead
Homes in Portishead are connected to the electricity network run by National Grid Electricity Distribution (South West) — the company most people still know as Western Power Distribution, which rebranded in September 2022 after National Grid took over; the physical network and the engineers on the ground didn't change, just the name on the vans.
For a standard single 7kW smart charger, this is mostly paperwork: as your installer, we handle the network notification after fitting, which is routine and doesn't usually need any action from you. It matters more if you want a 22kW three-phase charger, which typically means a new supply application to National Grid Electricity Distribution with its own cost and lead time, or if you're adding a charger to a property that already has solar and battery export registered — worth checking at survey rather than after the unit's on the wall.
Our EV Charger Installation Process
- Free survey — usually within 5 days of your enquiry, to check your consumer unit, cable route, parking type and, where relevant, your existing solar and battery setup.
- Fixed quote — a clear price for the charger and installation, with any extra work identified at survey (a consumer unit upgrade or a longer cable run, for example) costed up front.
- Installation — carried out by our own employed team, usually in a single day, finishing with full testing and a walkthrough of the app and any solar/eco charging modes.
- Handover — your OZEV-approved charger's warranty registration and the network notification are both handled for you; after that, we reply to any question within one working day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Port Marine need a different EV charger install to the rest of Portishead?
Usually yes, in how it's fitted rather than what's fitted. Port Marine's apartments and townhouses tend to have allocated parking, garages or parking courts rather than a private driveway, so the charger often goes on a garage wall or a post instead of the front of a house — and for flats, we may need written consent from a landlord or management company before we can install. The charger itself is the same OZEV-approved 7kW smart unit we'd fit anywhere else in Portishead; it's the wall, the cable run and the paperwork that differ, and we confirm all of that at your free survey.
I only have on-street parking in Portishead — can I still get a home charger?
It depends on whether you have any private space to route a cable to, even a small one — a charger has to connect to a parking space you actually have rights over, not a public road. If you rent or own a flat and do have a private off-street space, you may also qualify for the government's EV chargepoint grant, worth 75% of the cost up to £500 (raised from £350 on 1 April 2026). If your home has on-street parking only, we'll tell you honestly at survey whether a compliant install is possible, rather than take a booking we can't fulfil.
What's the difference between a 7kW and a 22kW charger for a Portishead home?
A 7kW (7.4kW) charger runs on a standard single-phase supply — the kind almost every Portishead home has — and fully charges most electric cars overnight. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase electricity supply, which is rare in UK homes and usually means a new supply application to National Grid Electricity Distribution to bring one in. We fit 7kW as standard and only specify 22kW where three-phase power already exists on site.
